GREENWOOD, S.C. — State agents are reviewing a Greenwood police shooting that unfolded before sunrise Wednesday inside a home on Hunter Street, where officers found an older man wounded and a younger man holding a gun.

Greenwood police said officers were sent to the house around 4:30 a.m. on a report that someone had been shot. They forced their way inside and moved toward noise at the back of the home.

In one room, police said, officers came upon a wounded 76-year-old man who had been shot, along with a 51-year-old man holding a handgun. The armed man aimed his weapon at officers, and one officer fired in response. The 51-year-old then went into another room, where police said he appears to have shot himself.

Each man went to a hospital for care. Their conditions had not been released Wednesday.

Police are not naming the 51-year-old while the case and any charging decisions are pending. Under department protocol, the South Carolina Law Enforcement Division was asked to handle an independent investigation of the officer shooting. Criminal cases in Greenwood are prosecuted by the solicitor’s office for the 8th Circuit.

The department’s chief credited the officers for how they handled a dangerous scene that changed quickly. More details will come out when releasing them will not hurt the investigation, police said.
