GREENWOOD, S.C. — Craig White, a Greenwood business and civic figure for nearly four decades, has been given the Order of the Palmetto, the top civilian honor South Carolina awards.

White arrived in Greenwood in 1988 as the first American associate hired by Fujifilm and helped the company grow its local operations to thousands of workers. Recruiting investment became another calling: he held leadership posts with the state Chamber of Commerce, the Upstate Alliance, the Greenwood Economic Alliance and the county’s economic partnership.

He joined Self Regional Healthcare in 2005, working in compliance, philanthropy and growth, including the system’s affiliations with hospitals in Abbeville and Edgefield County. His board service includes Lander University, Erskine College, the Greenwood YMCA and the regional hospice, and he led the Greenwood Rotary Club in 1999-2000.

Statewide, his work touched ACE Basin conservation, the Drummond Center at Lake Greenwood and the effort to recover and preserve the CSS Hunley.

The award dates to the summer of 1971, when Gov. John C. West presented the first one. A nonpartisan panel created in 1999 under Gov. Jim Hodges set the criteria and nomination process now used.

Fujifilm Manufacturing USA remains one of the major employers in Greenwood, alongside Self Regional Healthcare and Lander University.
