GREENWOOD, S.C. — Calling the Greenwood Police Department puts you in touch with several specialized units, each with its own job inside the city limits. Here is a look at who does what.

Wrecks and parking go to the traffic unit, which reports to the administrative services commander. Its officers investigate most crashes, enforce traffic and parking laws, handle most escorts and oversee school crossing guards.

The department has one full-time animal control officer who works 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. on weekdays. That officer explains city and state rules on pets and livestock, works with the county humane society and helps on cases that involve animals. The department does not pick up stray or feral cats. If an animal is aggressive or anyone, human or animal, may be in danger, call 911.

A separate officer tries to serve outstanding arrest warrants and keeps track of every warrant the department holds. That officer also handles crimes involving juveniles and takes young people and prisoners to and from court.

Crime scene and evidence officers have their own supervisor, who leads scene investigations and makes sure stored evidence is kept within state law and department policy.

The department is nationally accredited through CALEA, the national law enforcement accreditation commission, and has reached meritorious status, which is the highest accreditation level an agency can earn.

Criminal cases from Greenwood are prosecuted by the 8th Circuit solicitor’s office, which covers Abbeville, Greenwood, Laurens and Newberry counties.
