CLINTON, S.C. — The Clinton High School Red Devils took a serious blow to their playoff hopes Friday night, falling 36-20 at Chesnee in a region contest marked by penalties and stalled drives.
Clinton was flagged 14 times for 119 yards and never built lasting momentum in a start-and-stop game that also featured a fumble lost at a crucial point. The Red Devils fell to 3-4 overall and 0-2 in region play, with three region games left.
Chesnee improved to 5-2. Statewide Week 8 scoreboards listed the same Chesnee 36, Clinton 20 final reported from the field.
Clinton did put points on the board. Graydon Watkins caught a 78-yard touchdown pass from Owen Glenn, and Watkins later scored again on a 29-yard reception. Angelo Cromer added an early fourth-quarter touchdown for the Red Devils.
Watkins finished with five catches for 136 yards, while Glenn completed 9 of 13 passes for 148 yards. Clinton ran 37 times for 193 yards, but Chesnee piled up 347 rushing yards on 34 carries and out-gained the visitors 425-341.
Clinton hosts Mountain View Prep next Friday in the Coach Bill Rhodes tribute game, then hosts Landrum and Woodruff as it tries to climb back into the region race.
