HODGES, S.C. — A 64-year-old man died early Monday, Oct. 5, while trying to put out a fire at a home off Highway 254 in Hodges, in northern Greenwood County, S.C., the county coroner’s office said.
The coroner’s office said the man was found dead around 6:20 a.m. while firefighters were still working to extinguish the blaze. Later Monday, the office identified him as Albert Arnold Jr.
The cause and manner of death are pending, according to the coroner. The Greenwood County Coroner’s Office, the Greenwood County Sheriff’s Office and the South Carolina Law Enforcement Division are investigating.
Officials have not said what started the fire or how much damage the home sustained. Investigators are still working to determine how the blaze began and whether anyone else was inside when crews arrived.
