# GSU pilots AI tools for enhanced learning

Georgia State University is actively exploring the integration of artificial intelligence into its teaching and learning practices, with a recent pilot program concluding on August 14, 2026. This initiative aims to leverage AI to foster critical thinking and effective communication among students, while also providing faculty with resources and best practices for ethical AI use.

The Center for Excellence in Teaching, Learning, and Online Education (CETLOE) at Georgia State University is leading these efforts, recognizing both the challenges and opportunities presented by generative AI. A key focus is on establishing clear guidelines for student AI use and supporting instructors in experimenting with new AI technologies.

One notable pilot involved Marta Galindo, who integrated BoodleBox into her Global Career Pathways course. The pilot sought to determine how AI could serve as a meaningful learning partner, encouraging students to think critically and communicate effectively while reflecting on their work. The results and takeaways from this pilot are now available for faculty review.

In a separate initiative, CETLOE invited faculty to participate in a NISS-supported pilot exploring Studiosity, an AI-powered writing feedback platform. This platform, available 24/7, is designed to improve clarity, structure, and critical thinking by providing feedback aligned with Bloom’s Taxonomy, thereby supporting iterative revision processes.

The university emphasizes that instructors are responsible for setting boundaries for AI tool usage, such as ChatGPT, Google Gemini, or Microsoft Copilot, within their courses. Complete bans on AI are considered impractical due to its widespread integration into everyday tools like spell check and search engines. Instead, the focus is on providing specific guidance for each graded item, including quizzes, papers, projects, and discussion posts. A suggested syllabus statement and an AI Assessment Scale (AIAS) have been developed to help faculty communicate these expectations effectively. The AIAS, developed by Perkins et al. in 2024, offers a framework for guiding appropriate and ethical AI use in educational assessments, ranging from no AI assistance to full AI collaboration or exploration.

Key considerations for incorporating AI include emphasizing integrity and ethics, prohibiting the sharing of university login credentials with external AI tools, exploring career-relevant AI applications, and safeguarding protected information. The university also provides practical tips such as engaging in conversations with students about AI use, prioritizing low-stakes assessments, and adjusting assignments to account for AI capabilities. Instructors are also required to complete AI training, similar to cybersecurity training, with mandatory new-hire and bi-annual employee training, supplemented by periodic development workshops.

For questions regarding approved AI tools, data, or university policy, the AI@GSU website and the University AI Committee serve as primary resources. Teaching-focused guidance is also available through CETLOE’s AI resources, department chairs, deans, college AI committees, and trusted colleagues.
