South Carolina runs one of the longest deer seasons in the United States, and for hunters in Greenwood and across the SC Lakelands / Piedmont, knowing how SCDNR’s four game zones work is the difference between a full freezer and a wasted weekend. This guide covers the current private-land rules for Game Zone 2 — zones, dates, bag limits, tags, and mandatory reporting — so you can plan around real SCDNR regulations instead of last year’s rumors.
How SCDNR Divides South Carolina Into Deer Zones
South Carolina is split into four SCDNR-designated game zones, each with its own deer season structure:
- Game Zone 1 (mountain counties including Oconee, Pickens, and portions of Greenville/Anderson/Spartanburg north of the Norfolk Southern Railroad): shortest general firearms window; mountain bear zone overlays this zone
- Game Zone 2 (Piedmont / Upstate counties including Laurens, Newberry, Greenwood, York, Cherokee, Union, and Greenville/Spartanburg south of the NS Railroad): archery Sept 15–30, primitive Oct 1–10, gun/archery Oct 11–Jan 1 on private land
- Game Zone 3 (Midlands / Sandhills including Lexington, Richland, Sumter, Kershaw, and much of the central belt): earliest private-land opener — Aug 15 through Jan 1, archery and firearms from day one
- Game Zone 4 (coastal plain / Pee Dee / much of the Lowcountry): archery Aug 15–31, then gun/archery Sept 1–Jan 1 on private land
Greenwood (Greenwood County) sits in Game Zone 2. That means private-land deer hunting here does not open August 15 — Zone 2 follows the three-phase Piedmont calendar below.
Current Game Zone 2 Private-Land Deer Dates
On private land in Game Zone 2, SCDNR structures the season in three method windows:
- Archery only: Sept 15 – Sept 30
- Primitive weapons: Oct 1 – Oct 10
- Archery & firearms: Oct 11 – Jan 1
Youth deer hunt days (private land) are typically Sept 13 (antlered, limit 1) and Jan 3 (either-sex, limit 2) — confirm the current SCDNR guide each year. Crossbows are treated as archery equipment. WMA seasons inside Game Zone 2 are often shorter or quota-structured and must be checked tract-by-tract.
The rut around Greenwood and the greater SC Lakelands / Piedmont typically peaks between mid-October and the first week of November. Bowhunters and gun hunters from about October 20 through November 5 usually see the most consistent rut activity, especially on the first cold front that drops daytime highs into the 60s.
Bag Limits: What SC Residents Can Take
Statewide antlered limits apply across every zone and method. Antlerless limits are zone-specific on private land.
Antlered Bucks
- Resident daily bag: 2 antlered deer per day
- Resident season limit: 5 antlered deer per season (all zones and methods combined)
- Of those 5, 2 must meet the SCDNR antler restriction (four-or-more points on one antler or 12-inch inside spread)
- Non-resident season limit: 4 antlered deer
Antlerless Deer (Game Zone 2 private land)
- Antlerless daily bag: 2 per day
- Season limit: 8 antlerless deer (Zones 2–4 private land)
- Individual Antlerless Deer Tags required; valid on private land starting September 15 (WMA rules vary by tract)
Residents typically receive free unrestricted buck tags and free antlerless tags with a valid hunting license and big game permit; additional antlerless tags are sold through SCDNR. Always confirm the current tag package in the SCDNR Hunting and Fishing Guide.
SC Game Check: Mandatory Reporting
Every deer taken in South Carolina must be tagged at the point of kill and reported through SC Game Check by midnight the day of harvest (Go Outdoors SC app or SCDNR website). Enter tag number, location, weapon type, and sex. Failure to report can bring a fine and license suspension.
Where Greenwood Hunters Can Legally Hunt Deer
Public deer hunting near Greenwood centers on SCDNR Wildlife Management Areas and, where applicable, Sumter National Forest tracts enrolled in the WMA program. Access requires a WMA permit in addition to a base hunting license and big game permit. Private-land leases and guided hunts across the SC Lakelands / Piedmont remain the other primary options — always get written landowner permission.

Bottom Line for the 2026-2027 Season
Get your SC hunting license and big game permit early via Go Outdoors SC. Buy a WMA permit if you will hunt any state-managed public land. Sight in before archery opener, and start pulling trail-camera cards by early September. Game Zone 2 private-land archery opens September 15 — not August 15. Bring water on warm early sits, wear scent-free clothing, and be in the stand before first light once the rut window hits.
Always verify dates, bag limits, and WMA rules in the current SCDNR Hunting and Fishing Guide before you hunt. Regulations can change by board action.
